National University of Lesotho

Description

About National University of Lesotho

The origins of the National University of Lesotho trace back to April 8, 1945, when The Roman Catholic Hierarchy of Southern Africa established a Catholic University College in Rome. This college was established to provide African Catholic students with post-matriculation education and religious guidance, as the 1938 Synod of Catholic Bishops in South Africa decided. Initially, the college operated in a temporary primary school building at Roma Mission, 34 kilometres from Maseru. By 1946, it moved to its current location thanks to a 52-acre land grant from the Paramount Chief. 1950, the college was entrusted to the Congregation of Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI). The transformation into the National University of Lesotho occurred on October 20, 1975, when the Lesotho Interim National Assembly enacted Act No. 13 of 1975, situating the university on the former Lesotho and Swaziland (UBLS), a campus of the University of Botswana.
