The University of Makeni, formerly known as the Fatima Institute and often called UNIMAK, is the premier private Catholic institution of higher learning in Makeni, Sierra Leone. Established on October 8, 2005, by the Emeritus of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Makeni, under the leadership of Reverend George Biguzzi, UNIMAK has been a cornerstone of educational advancement in the region. In August 2009, it attained university status and adopted its current name, solidifying its commitment to academic excellence and social development. As a university owned by the Diocese of Makeni, the Bishop of Makeni serves as the chancellor, underscoring the institution’s close ties to the Catholic Church and its dedication to serving the community through education.
