About Us

The Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU) is a state university established in 1999 through an Act of Parliament (ZOU Act, Chapter 25:20). Functioning under the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development, ZOU is dedicated to providing higher education via Open and Distance electronic Learning (ODeL). It is led by the esteemed Chancellor President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa and Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Henry Gundani, who bring their vast experience and vision to guide the university.

ZOU comprises eight faculties: Agriculture, Arts, Culture and Heritage Studies, Education, Commerce, Law, Applied Social Sciences, Science, and Technology. Additionally, it features a Higher Degrees Directorate for Master and Doctor of Philosophy candidates. Accredited by the Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education (ZIMCHE), ZOU offers a comprehensive range of degrees, diplomas, certificates, and short courses, ensuring a program that suits every individual’s educational aspirations. By 2018, ZOU had graduated over 30,000 students who have contributed significantly to various sectors of the economy.

ZOU is committed to ensuring comprehensive support for its students. It provides easy-to-follow study materials upon registration and facilitates e-learning through its “My Vista” platform, which allows students to manage their studies online from anywhere in the world. The university operates regional campuses in all ten provinces of Zimbabwe, each serving as a centre for registration, face-to-face tutoring, counselling, assignment administration, and examination venues. Additionally, ZOU has a Virtual Regional Campus to accommodate regional and international students. The institution upholds rigorous standards to ensure its qualifications meet the socio-economic needs of society, supported by a network of professional tutors and staff from universities worldwide, providing a robust support system for students.
